Prior to her appointment as Principal Secretary, State Department of Broadcasting & Telecommunication, Mrs. Fatuma Hirsi Mohamed was the Principal Secretary for the State Department of Tourism. Mrs. Mohamed had also served as an international Civil Servant working for the Universal Postal Union, a specialized agency of the United Nations established as an impartial international organization within which Governments and the private sector could advance the operation and development of Postal services.
Mrs. Mohamed has previous experience in various business sectors including former Kenya Posts and Telecommunication Corporation, the Communications Commission of Kenya now Communications Authority; Kencell Communications Ltd, currently, Airtel Kenya Ltd, Nation Media Group and the Gulf African Bank.
Fatuma has wide experience in strategic implementation and governance of business through marketing, public relations, communications, community and stakeholder relation building, Corporate Social Responsibility and media engagement.
While at the Tourism Ministry, Fatuma, steered the tourism sector to become the second highest foreign exchange earner in the country with a growth rate of about 17% in both arrivals and revenue receipts. This achievement earned her global recognition as 2018 Woman Achiever in the promotion of tourism by the Institute of South Asian Women (ISAW) at the annual International Tourism Bourse (ITB) in Germany.
Fatuma holds an MBA in strategy and marketing, a BA (Hons) in languages and a postgraduate diploma in Public Relations. She is currently a PhD student in Communications Studies. Fatuma is multilingual and speaks English, French, Kiswahili, Somali and basic Arabic.
Fatuma has been recognized for her leadership and honoured with a Fellow and Lifetime Achievement award from the Public Relations Society of Kenya which she served as Chairman from 2002 to 20o7. She has also been awarded by the President of the Republic of Kenya with an Order of Chief of the order of the Burning Spear (CBS).
